Vernon RCMP warn of door-to-door scammers operating in the area – Vernon News

Scammers come knocking

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP are warning people about door-to-door scammers operating in the area.

“It seems like this is becoming more and more common in our community lately,” said Const. Chris Terleski.

Police are issuing the warning after receiving reports of suspicious individuals claiming to be from charities, aid organizations and utility companies (telephone/gas/hydro) going door to door asking for money.

“You should always be careful when someone shows up at your door asking for money,” Terleski said. “Typically, these scammers use high-pressure tactics or emotional narratives to solicit cash donations, entice you to make a purchase or, in some cases, steal your personal information. In addition to monetary loss, it can also lead to identity theft and other forms of fraud. That’s why it’s so important to protect yourself.”

Here’s what to look out for:

  • Unsolicited Visitors: Legitimate organizations rarely send people door to door without prior contact
  • No official ID: Employees must have clear identification with the name and registration number of the charity
  • Pressure to donate: If they push you to donate or make a purchase on the spot, that’s a red flag;
  • Unverifiable information: Ask about their website and verify before donating
  • No receipts or paperwork: A legitimate charity will always provide documentation for donations

How to protect yourself:

  • Always research the organization before donating
  • Donate directly through official websites or trusted platforms
  • Never give cash or personal information (for example: credit card details) at the door
  • Report suspicious activity immediately and directly to the police
