Man arrested after grandfather was shot, killed with 5-year-old grandson in car

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham police subsequently made an arrest 45-year-old Enrique Cortes Martinez was shot and killed in what investigators believe was a roadside shooting.

Just before 8 a.m. on Monday, November 11, officers from the East Precinct were dispatched to a person shot near Gadsden Highway and Parkway East.

When officers arrived, they found Martinez slumped in a pickup truck. His 5-year-old grandson was also in the vehicle, but he was not struck by gunfire.

Birmingham Police say 29-year-old Anson Evans, of Center Point, was taken into custody at an apartment on Thursday, November 14, before being taken to BPD Headquarters and the Birmingham City Jail.

After reviewing the information, authorities obtained an arrest warrant for capital murder (victim in vehicle) for Evans.

Birmingham police say citizens provided tips to authorities during the investigation that helped them identify Evans as a suspect in the shooting. Within hours of receiving the tips, Birmingham police said they took Evans into custody.

“Anson Evans would not have been arrested on Thursday had community members not provided tips to our detectives,” Birmingham police said.

Evans is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
