Director of Postmates enters hospice and shares message: ‘Be kind, be brave’

James Butts, the former senior vice president of product & design at Postmates, shared heartfelt reflections during his battle with stage 4 colorectal cancer.

His emotional message, posted to X on November 13, has gone viral and touched thousands of people as he prepared to be admitted to a hospice.

“I’m going to hospice today. I probably won’t update much if at all,” he said in a message. “But I wanted to say: be kind, be brave, be principled, be an idealist. Most importantly, be a decent human being. I love that we existed together, in this moment.”

Butts revealed his for the first time cancer diagnosis on Instagram in September 2023. His recent updates revealed the progression of his disease, with Butts now facing the end of treatment options.

He elaborated on this in videos shared to his Instagram Story that provided insight into the dramatic turn his health has taken.

“A week ago, things took a turn for the worse,” Butts explained, according to PEOPLE. “My liver values ​​were not good, my blood tests were very poor.”

Butts went on to describe how his body changes due to the progression of the disease, noting jaundice as his liver function declines.

Despite his poor health, he said: ‘I don’t think this is a losing battle in any way. In any case, it’s a draw. If I die, the cancer dies with me. So all we’re going to do is move forward, right? ?”

His messages have sparked an outpouring of support and admiration from people around the world, many of whom have never met him but are deeply moved by his courage and perspective.
