MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – An Eight Mile man is accused of impersonating a peace officer.

According to Mobile Police, 57-year-old Kenneth Salter presented himself as a Mobile County Sheriff’s deputy at Chef King, located in the University Shopping Village on Old Shell Road, on Nov. 14.

An employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, told me that Salter has been a regular customer for months and was shocked by his behavior last night.

She said Salter ordered from the restaurant while another customer waited for their food. Suddenly, after she started getting their things ready, things escalated.

“He showed me his wallet and there’s a badge on it,” she said. “He told me he’s a police officer. He was swearing at the other customer and also, he had a jacket on and then he put his hand in his jacket, and pretended to have a, I don’t know if he had a gun or not, but pretended he had a gun.”

According to police, Salter attempted to apprehend the victim, but his attempt was unsuccessful.

The Chef King staff member said that after the altercation, Salter chased the customer out of the store and into the parking lot.

She said Salter drove his vehicle onto the sidewalk just in front of the store after ramming into the victim’s vehicle.

According to police, the victim’s car has minor damage.

MPD confirmed Salter is not an MCSO deputy.

Salter is also charged with third-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and harassment.

Jail records show his bond is set at $4,500 and his court date is scheduled for Nov. 19.
