“Why are these fish in Singapore so big!”: Woman shocked to find Arapaimas in Dempsey Hill Pond

Here’s something that could be done interested fishing enthusiasts.

A Xiaohongshu user was shocked when she recently came across rare giant arapaimas in a public pond in Singapore.

“Why are these fish in Singapore so big! It’s outrageous! Why are there giants in the mall!” she wrote.

A quick search shows that the arapaimas are not found in a shopping center, but in Dempsey Hill Pond, and that they have lived there for more than a decade.

For those who don’t know, the arapaima is considered the largest freshwater fish in the world and can grow up to three meters in length.

The woman continued: “I always thought these fish were only found in aquariums. They (can) get so close (to us)! There is no protection at all. It’s super scary!”

She also said the arapaimas likely belong to the pond’s owner and wondered if “it was something that made rich people happy.”

She was apparently so scared of the fish that her “hands were shaking” while she was making the video.

Netizens were intrigued by the post, with many saying they never knew the pond existed and will now make a trip down to see the fish.

Others agreed with her about how “scary” the arapaimas looked, with some saying they could just “jump over the railing of the pond.”

Real?

Well, for those looking for a ‘safer’ option, a visit to River Wonders in Mandai might be the better option.
