Chemical explosion in Durban: 1 dead, 2 critical – LNN

One person has been killed and two others seriously injured in a chemical explosion on Balfour Road, Wentworth, Durban this afternoon.

Initial reports indicate that a gas cylinder stored on the premises by a company exploded.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson says paramedics arrived to a chaotic scene. “The explosion injured three people. Advanced life support paramedics attempted to stabilize the three seriously injured people. However, one of the patients suffered cardiac arrest due to the nature of his injuries and unfortunately passed away,” he added.

Jamieson says the other two patients were stabilized at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for emergency care.

Emergency teams, including the fire brigade and private security companies, rushed to the scene to provide assistance.

At the time of publication, containment efforts were underway to ensure the area was safe.
