BRPD officer placed on administrative leave after officer-involved shooting

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – An officer with the Baton Rouge Police Department has been placed on administrative leave in connection with a shooting that night.

According to Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr., officers responded to the 3400 block of N. Sherwood Forest Drive around 1:14 a.m. on Thursday, November 21. There were disturbances involving a serious violent crime between housemates. One roommate allegedly attacked the other with a dangerous weapon.

Officers attempted to contact the man, who was armed with a knife, and ignored officers’ verbal commands to drop the weapon. The man did not respond to this and, according to the police, walked towards the officers with the knife. One of the officers then fired one shot, hitting the man.

Officers assisted the man at the scene and he was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

No officers were injured in the incident.

BRPD has handled or investigated previous incidents at the address. However, after this shooting incident occurred, it was learned that the listed address is actually outside the Baton Rouge city limits. Therefore, Louisiana State Police will take the lead in the investigation.

Per department policy, one BRPD officer was placed on administrative leave.
