Boy involved in crash that killed another boy receives a new bicycle from the Elyria Police Department

Elyria police presented Aiden Helland, who collided with a vehicle while biking with his late friend on Oct. 12, with a new bicycle and helmet on Oct. 24 after the child was released from the hospital.

A 20-year-old driver of a 2001 Jeep SUV was traveling east on Burns Road when he tried to maneuver around the two boys riding bicycles in the road, Elyria police said.

Bryant “Tide” Bartlett, 9, died from his injuries while Aiden, 10, was hospitalized with serious injuries after the incident, police said.

“Tonight we welcomed Aiden Helland and his parents to the Elyria Police Department,” the Elyria Police Department said in a social media post. “Aiden has been released from hospital and is recovering from injuries sustained in a recent car accident on Burns Rd.”

The Walmart in Elyria, 1000 Chestnut Commons Drive, donated the bicycle and helmet, and the Sailorway Middle School PTA in Vermilion provided Halloween treats and gift cards, the post said.

Aiden also received bike locks, lights and other safety items from Lorain County Public Health through the Elyria Safe Routes to School program, the post said.

“We would also like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Bryant ‘Tide’ Bartlett,” the message said.

Elyria Police investigators are investigating all aspects of this tragic accident and the investigation remains open and ongoing, the post said.

“Thanks for stopping by, Aiden. You are always welcome,” the message said.

The driver of the Jeep was uninjured in the accident.
