Amorim needs A LOT of time on the training ground to fix Man Utd… unfortunately he won’t get it, writes Charlie Wyett

In theory, the only way out for Manchester United is writes Charlie Wyett.

We’re almost a third of the way through this Premier League season and it’s still dismaying to see United in twelfth place.

They have only four wins with a goal difference of 0. Only Everton, Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored fewer.

It is certainly not a bad position and a point in Ipswich illustrated the enormous task that Ruben Amorim faces.

United fans chanted their new manager’s name throughout the match.

They also gave the players a thunderous applause at the final whistle and while this was an improvement on some of the performances this season, the bar is set quite low.

The club’s optimistic supporters will see their team only six points clear of the top four. Ultimately, though, it’s hard to see United even reaching last season’s eighth-place finish as things look worse.

United’s patchy defense will improve – and a three-man formation at the back will help them – but you have to wonder where the goals will come from. Marcus Rashford struck after 81 seconds and then remained missing for the rest of his 68 minutes on the pitch.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee were also introduced in that double substitution midway through the second half, but added absolutely nothing. What a terrible pair of signings they have turned out to be and United fans would swap them both for Ipswich’s Liam Delap.

Amorim did not celebrate Rashford’s goal and walked awkwardly around his technical area the entire time.

Whenever there was a stoppage in play, he would call out to the players for instructions.

Alejandro Garnacho headed towards the touchline a few times, while there were also words for Diogo Dalot, Casemiro and Jonny Evans.

Amorim, a manager with infectious enthusiasm, will be hopeful he can get his message across to all the players in the coming weeks.

But the problem for the Portuguese coach is that this was the first of ten games in the space of 33 days.

What he really needs is periods on the training field without midweek matches, but he does not have that luxury.

Keane took charge of 81 games as Ipswich boss, winning 28.

He was fired in January 2011 and replaced by Paul Jewell.

The Man Utd legend failed to make it again but has worked as a No.2 since Aston Villa, Nottingham forest and the Republic of Ireland national team.

Yesterday’s incident came after a Arsenal supporter found guilty of headbutting Keane.

Scott Law was convicted of assaulting Keane during a match in September 2023.

The married father-of-two, who claimed he acted in self-defence, was given a 12-month community order and a three-year competition ban.

Law has appealed his conviction and sentence, but a date has yet to be set.

After the incident with Law, Keane admitted he was growing tired of life as a pundit.

He said: “I will struggle to do this for the next ten months. I love football, but I love the hassle of matches, going to matches and the fuss of fans.

“A few months ago I was in court while someone headbutted me. Do you think I like that side of it? Absolutely not.”

SunSport exclusively revealed at the time that Keane was “shocked” by the incident.
