The accident happened on the city’s southwest side just before 6 p.m. last Wednesday.

Investigators say a gray or black four-door sedan with a male driver struck a 54-year-old woman crossing the street near Western Avenue and Marquette Road.

The driver fled the scene and the victim died from her injuries.

Tanja Annzionetta Safforld was identified Monday by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Police have released images of the car wanted in connection with the fatal crash.

Chicago police continue to investigate. No arrests have been made.

The family said Monday that Safforld was making a simple trip to the dollar store. But when the grandmother didn’t come home, they said they knew something was wrong.

“We had a movie night,” said niece Kyara Safforld. “And when she didn’t come back, I told my dad, ‘My aunt has been on the road for over an hour.’ And it just took off from there.”

Loved ones returned Monday with heavy hearts to the intersection, just three blocks from Tanja Safforld’s home.

“What will our Thanksgiving be for whoever did this to her?” said brother Thomas Safforld. ‘She cooked for us every holiday. She makes our cakes. This year we don’t even have our cakes. That’s what it means to us. That’s what it means.’

Tanja Safforld’s family only knew where she was a day later.

“We couldn’t be with her to say goodbye or anything,” daughter Brittany Rogers said.

Now the family is calling for justice.

“Just turn yourself in. We forgive you. Come on, this is someone’s mother, please,” said son Damion Martin.
