KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — A U.S. soldier assigned to a military hospital in Germany will spend more than four years behind bars and must register as a sex offender after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a fellow female soldier in his barracks room.

Pfc. Shreyan Karki, 20, a member of the Medical Readiness Battalion at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, was convicted Friday by a military jury in Kaiserslautern of assault and battery with battery, an Army statement said Tuesday.

In addition to a prison sentence of four years and two months, Karki was sentenced to a demotion in rank to private and a dishonorable discharge.

The crime occurred on December 13, 2023, just after both Karki and the victim arrived in Landstuhl for their assignments in the same unit, the statement said.

The woman became ill while in Karki’s barracks room, so he moved her to a guest bed and then sexually assaulted her, the affidavit said.

Karki was charged in August. During the trial, the victim’s testimony was corroborated by DNA evidence, eyewitness testimony and a sexual assault nurse, the military said in the statement.

“The severe sentences the suspects face are in line with the impact this offense will have on the victim for the rest of her life,” said prosecutor Maj. Sara Nicholson.
