3 reasons the Eagles are right to elevate Cooper DeJean on their depth chart

The news blew like a strong, rushing wind. Okay… Maybe it wasn’t that extreme, but it was really cool to hear (or read). ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler recently released their Week 6 buzz, and Fowler informed us that it’s “Cooper DeJean time.”

Depending on where you are, you heard a pin drop or witnessed a standing ovation. Okay… That was also a little dramatic.

Here’s the point. The Eagles’ first two draft picks from the most recent selection meeting cracked the starting lineup. And in DeJean’s case, this is absolutely the right decision. Here are three reasons why we can say this with confidence.

No Eagles cornerback has been on Philly’s roster longer than Avonte Maddox. No other Eagles corner has more experience playing for this team in the slot, but after a long list of injuries and watching him perform so far this season, we may have our answer to a question we’ve been asking.

It’s official. The injuries finally caught up with him. He’s just not the same player we remember from the last time he was reasonably healthy.

Eli Ricks can play inside and outside, but he is tall, thin and rangy. Kelee Ringo has the prototypical size to line up at the outside corner and be effective.

Ricks is at the bottom of the depth chart. Ringo is a good depth option, although we’d love to see his role expanded. The coaching staff doesn’t seem to be in love with Isaiah Rodgers, so it makes sense to move the rookie into the role.

Additionally, you would want first and second round players to get on the field and contribute early. The only way they can really improve is by playing.

So here we are. The Iowa rookie was thrown into the fire. He will need to endure some hardships and take his lumps. At first we don’t express perfection, but let’s be honest.

It’s not like things could get any worse than what we saw. Aside from a great showing in New Orleans, this Eagles secondary has been atrocious.
