The Killingly Board of Education unanimously approved a new personal electronic device policy for students at its meeting Wednesday night.

The new policy took effect immediately upon approval. There are guidelines for each level of education.

“The Board recognizes that, depending on how they are used, cell phones and other wireless communication devices can be a valuable learning tool or a source of disruption to the learning environment,” the policy states.

For elementary school students, the use of personal communication devices will not be permitted during school hours. These devices must be turned off or turned on silent and left in backpacks stored in the student’s locker/cubicle or in another location determined by the school administration.

Rules for elementary and middle school students

Just like elementary school students, high school students are not permitted to use personal communication devices during school hours. These devices must be turned off or turned on in silent mode and left in backpacks, stored in the student’s locker or in another location determined by the school administration. However, in high school, cell phones are allowed in the classroom for academic purposes with the teacher’s consent.
