Footage shows the moment a driver forced an ambulance with blue lights on into a ditch, causing a “life-threatening” delay.

The accident caused significant damage to the ambulance as it tried to avoid a head-on collision with a driver.

Footage from the ambulance’s dashboard camera shows how the South Central Ambulance Service approaches a junction on the A339 in Alton, Hampshire, on Friday, September 20.

Suddenly, a white Ford Fiesta type car leaves the intersection with Spain Lane right in front of the ambulance at around 11:15 pm.

The two vehicles appear to brush sides before the ambulance falls over as its driver tries to avoid a full collision, landing sideways into the ditch.

The driver of the white car did not stop at the scene, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police confirmed.

The force said: ‘Thankfully, no one was injured as a result.

‘The ambulance was not transporting any patients at the time but was on a blue light and this caused a considerable and potentially fatal delay in reaching the patient, who was attended to by another ambulance.’

The accident caused around £26,000 worth of damage to the ambulance and it will be out of action for a month.

A number of “lines of inquiry” are underway to “identify this vehicle and its driver”, the force said.

“If you are this driver, or know who he is, please contact us,” he added.

Officers would also like to speak to anyone who has a dash cam or CCTV footage.
