Andrew Garfield wasn’t shocked when the now infamous horse meme We live in time went viral. In fact, he kind of predicted what would happen.

Talking to Weekly entertainmentthe 41-year-old actor admitted that as soon as he saw the image he knew it was going to explode.

“I saw it and thought, ‘Oh, this is a distraction,’” he said, noting that he was probably just being “hypervigilant” and that the creators “(knew) what they were doing.”

THE Amazing Spider-Man star remembers returning from a six-day retreat and her phone blowing up with the meme that quickly went viral. He admitted: “It’s very disturbing and prominent in the frame. It was a mistake.”

In the new film, which opens on October 11, Garfield stars alongside Florence Pugh in a story of love and heartbreak. But it was a leaked image of a wide-eyed carousel horse intruding on one of their romantic scenes that stole the spotlight.

The bizarre photo quickly took over the internet, with the horse being photoshopped into famous movie moments and even appearing in Stephen Colbert’s monologue. Colbert joked, “That pony is tripping on ketamine.”

Ultimately, Garfield found the meme amusing, saying, “It created a lot of happy content for a lot of people, including me. I cried with laughter when I discovered all the memes.”

Even director John Crowley was surprised, but found the whole situation hilarious, noting that the horse was just a real carousel horse from a Victorian steam fair. Now, he says, “These horses…will never look the same to me.”
