Man caught raping woman after phone hidden under pillow connected to call is jailed for six years

A man who was caught on a cellphone call raping a woman has been jailed for six years.

Dane Thompson struck just days after meeting the victim, having initially contacted her online.

The 35-year-old was sentenced at Glasgow High Court on Thursday.

Thompson – who has convictions dating back to when he was 14 – was previously found guilty of raping the woman at his home in the city’s Scotstoun in February 2023.

He claimed to have been the victim of lies made against him.

The trial heard how the traumatized woman bravely tried to fight Thompson during the attack and scratched him.

Jurors were told her phone was under her pillow during the incident.

A call ended up being made to one of the woman’s friends.

In his closing speech, prosecutor Mark Mohammed KC stated: “She heard what happened.

“There was a missed call and (the friend) called back.

“She was wired and heard (the victim) say, ‘Get off me.’”

Mohammed said this supported the woman’s account that she had been sexually assaulted.

In addition to the rape, Thompson was also convicted of abusive behavior towards the victim.

His lawyer Duncan McPhie said: “He gave evidence at the trial, denied the allegations and maintains that position.”

In sentencing, Lord Colbeck said Thompson had “shown no insight” into the impact of his actions.

The judge stated: “You met your victim online, communicated with her for two months and she came to Glasgow.

“Seven days after your arrival, you were arrested and remanded in custody in relation to the crimes committed against her.

“You engaged in behavior that was abusive. Most significantly, you raped her despite her protests.”

Thompson was placed on the sex offender list indefinitely. He was also banned from contacting the woman.
