Bidadari is a growing housing estate and it may be hard to believe that the area was once a cemetery. But don’t worry; this is not the filming location for the next edition of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. Instead, the cute, laid-back variant of the friendly Pooh bear we all know is what inspired the newly opened Bidadari Park. Confused? Keep reading.


What to know about Bidadari Park

Bidadari Natural Park open to the public in 3rd September 2024and covers an area of ​​18 football fields. The Bidadari cemetery was dug up in 2004 to make way for new housing complexes, but years of waiting required nature’s intervention.

The development of Bidadari Park is a combined effort by the Singapore Housing and Development Board, the National Parks Board, PUB and the National Heritage Board to provide residents with greenery nearby.


How to get to Bidadari Park?


The park is just a short walk away 5 minute walk far from Woodleigh MRT station. Cross The Woodleight Mall on your way out and go through the traffic lights. Alternatively, those residing along the Circle Line can also reach the park via Bartley Subwaywhich requires a longer walking distance 20 minutes.

We first meet the star of the show, Alkaff Lake. Built to resemble the serenity of the ancient Alkaff Lake Gardens, it is an ideal recreational spot for picnics with dear or some solo relaxation time.

Before you assume the body of water is just for aesthetics, it’s not. At the lowest point on the property, the lake acts as a stormwater retention pond and protects nearby properties from flash flooding.

Water levels in the lake remain at around 1.5m on normal sunny days and are said to rise to an impressive 4m when it rains heavily, submerging nearby trails. Although rare and it would take 1.5 hours of heavy rain to reach this height, warning systems are in place to warn pedestrians to avoid the lake when the water level reaches 2m.

Hikers can walk along the trails that wind through the forest. Stroll along the boardwalk and spot small inhabitants, such as frogs and turtles, hiding in the marshes.

The park has 2 community spaces – Tembusu and Open lawn – which can host larger-scale events when necessary.

Bidadari is acclaimed for its rich birdlife, and the area especially welcomes the arrival of many migratory birds. Forest areas are maintained within the park so that the public can enjoy nature.

If your legs need a break, there are birdwatching groups scattered along the trails that also serve as resting spots. Try to spot the Finlayson squirrel, a population limited to the Bidadari area and you may be able to recognize it by its cream and dark brown fur.

The first and only of our natural parks, the raptor nest platform it is a nesting site for 20m-high birds of prey, such as Singapore’s most distinctive raptor, the white-bellied sea eagle.

Remember to check the hill also. It is an extension of the park and the highest point, making it another excellent place for bird watching. Park goers can access this area via a 100m bridge with abundant plants and flowers in bloom.

It’s perfect for little ones to run around. Think tall slides, climbing nets and a mini zipline; It’s enough to ignite the child in us. Climb to the top and you’ll find yourself in an observation pod, where you can look around and expect to find a yellow bear in his red shirt waving at you.

Learn about the history of Bidadari and the heritage walk through storyboards. The walk is located along the old Upper Aljunied Road, which has since been pedestrianized and renamed Sang Nila Utama Boulevard. Part of the walk has not yet been fully completed, but the rest should be ready by the end of the year.

Singaporeans can also look forward to a memorial garden, which will be completed in the first half of 2025 and will feature artefacts from the old Bidadari Memorial Garden.
