Caught on CCTV: Moment man stole crown goddess Kali gifted by PM Modi to Bangladesh

A man wearing a white t-shirt and jeans allegedly entered the Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in Bangladesh, took the religious article – reportedly the crown gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh in 2021 – and left the premises, showing CCTV footage. According to reports, the crown went missing from the temple on Thursday.

The Daly Star reported on Thursday that a crown of goddess Kali at the Jeshoreshwari Temple in Shyamnagar of Satkhira, which was gifted by PM Narendra Modi, was stolen.

The report quoted the temple priest as saying he left the temple after finishing the day’s service at around 2pm. Shortly afterwards, the temple’s cleaning team came in to clean the place. Some time later, they noticed that the crown was missing from the deity’s head.

Police confirmed the incident and said they are analyzing CCTV footage from the temple to identify the thief.

A day later, CCTV footage circulated on social media, with reports claiming that the video clip showed the moment the crown was stolen from the temple. Mint was unable to verify the video.

Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh expressed deep concern over the theft and appealed to authorities to recover the item and take action against the perpetrators.

PM Modi visited Jeshoreshwari Temple on March 27, 2021, as part of his Bangladesh trip. On that day, PM Modi placed the crown on the deity’s head as a symbolic gesture. The temple is one of the 52 Shakti Peeths of Hinduism, the Daily Star reported.
