Deadly Los Angeles shooting on 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights; search for suspects continues

LOS ANGELESAn apparent road rage incident led to a deadly shooting, several strings of car crashes and the 5 Freeway closed for at least seven hours in Los Angeles.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the alleged road rage incident happened between a gold Cadillac and a group of suspected armed men on surface streets on Thursday, October 10. The feud spilled onto Highway 5 near Boyle Heights, and then the gold Cadillac ended up rear-ending a car that had nothing to do with the alleged road rage incident.

After the Cadillac crashed, the suspects exited the car they were in and began shooting at the people inside the Cadillac, the CHP said.

“There are vehicles sitting in traffic at four or five o’clock in the afternoon on a major artery, with people getting out and getting into a car and shooting at other people. It’s simply detrimental to public safety,” said CHP Lt. Bob Purvis. during a press conference about the incident Thursday night.

The CHP said the driver of the Cadillac managed to make a U-turn into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes and ended up being involved in another accident with other cars that also had nothing to do with the shooting in the alleged road rage incident.

The shooting ended up killing the passenger and the driver of the Cadillac was taken to the hospital.

“The driver of the Durango fled the scene. We believe they are two adult Hispanic males,” Lt. Purvis said.

The shooting ended up closing the northbound lanes of Highway 5.

SkyFOX ended after the shooting around 5 p.m. near South Grande Vista Avenue in Boyle Heights.

Authorities believe up to three suspects are at large. As of Thursday night, descriptions of the suspects in the shooting had not been released by authorities.

All lanes of the highway were reopened this Friday morning.

“We hope they catch them soon because we don’t know what their intentions are, whether to hurt more people or not,” said area resident Jessica Satelo.

Anyone with information or dash cam video that may have captured the incident on Highway 5 is asked to contact authorities.

FOX 11’s Mario Ramirez contributed to this report.
