The best Silent Hill 2 mods for the remake

What are the best Silent Hill 2 remake mods? It’s never long after a new PC game is released for the game modding community to hit us with the best and weirdest mods. Performance mods come first, then some aesthetic ones, followed by the wild and wonderful.

After finishing our first few playthroughs of Silent Hill 2, we of course had to delve into the world of mods for the single-player game – and the community did not disappoint. In the first few days after the puzzle game’s release, we had Thomas the Tank Engine and a much sunnier Silent Hills, with even more to come. For now, here are the best Silent Hill 2 mods for the remake.

Thomas the Tank Engine's face looks at James Sunderland as the blue train replaces Pyramid Head in the Pyramid the Tank Engine Silent Hill 2 mod.

The best Silent Hill 2 mods are:

Tank Engine Pyramid

We promise there are some more serious mods on this list, and we’re not sure Thomas the Tank Engine fits Silent Hill’s aesthetic, but like the (sort of) awesome Eater of Skies Skyrim mod, it seems like you can’t have a moddable game these days without seeing the smiling face of Thomas the tank engine appears.

In Pyramid the Tank Engine, Thomas replaces Pyramid Head. Of course. In fact, we’re not sure which is scarier. It turns out we also have a guide on how to beat Pyramid Head in the Silent Hill 2 remake, which can, of course, also apply to Thomas.

Ultra Plus Fixes

We tell you. Here it is a more sensible mod of Silent Hill 2. Ultra Plus Fixes and Visual Improvements, as you might expect, make some small, comprehensive changes to the game as a whole to improve performance and appearance. We didn’t have many issues playing the game in our Silent Hill 2 review, but there are definitely issues with stuttering, while this mod also improves reflection, particles, and other small graphical details.

The city of Silent Hill appears clearer and fog-free with the Silent Hill 2 HD collection mod installed.

Silent Hill 2 HD Collection

If you’ve played the Silent Hill HD collection on console, with Silent Hill 2 and 3, you know there are some… problems therefore. Problems with Silent Hill’s original code made it difficult to properly port the game, which is why it has bugs and other performance issues. What it doesn’t have, however, is fog. Well, that’s true, but not really. And that’s exactly what FrancisLouis aims for with this Silent Hill 2 HD collection remake mod.

The remake of Silent Hill 2 is a beautiful homage to the original and looks fantastic for a modern game, and the intense fog is the most defining feature of Silent Hill’s town. However, if you prefer to see the deteriorating landscape around you – and any mannequins crawling over you – then you can see much more clearly with this mod.

The sun shines brightly on James and Maria in Silent Hill with Sunny Hills, one of the best Silent Hill 2 mods, installed.

Sunny hills

Or go even further with the Sunny Hills mod! Not only is there no fog, but the sun has finally decided to shine over the city, and you would be mistaken if you thought that you, James and Maria were just on a happy summer getaway. Just look at those rays shining in Rosewater Park!

We’re not afraid to say that, in some scenes, this delicious dose of vitamin D detracts from Silent Hill 2’s spooky aesthetic, but when combined with the fog, it somehow makes it even harder to see. We all know what it’s like when sunlight hits you in the wrong place, so hopefully that doesn’t happen when a dummy or a cockroach is crawling around your feet.

Classic Angela

Unless you were living under a rock before the Silent Hill 2 remake’s release date, you’ll know that many fans took issue with the new game’s character models, Angela in particular. Yes, especially since she actually looks closer to her intended age, but if you’re not a fan of the new Angela – played by Gianna Kiehl in the Silent Hill 2 cast – then we have the mod for you.

NorskPL’s classic Angela, as you can imagine, replaces the new Angela model with the old one, so you’ll feel like you’re back in 2001. Plus everything else about the new game.

James Sunderland wears a pink Robbie the Rabbit mask in one of the best Silent Hill 2 remake mods.

Robbie the Rabbit Hat

If you purchased the Deluxe Edition of Silent Hill 2, you will be able to run around town as James wearing a pizza box Pyramid Head mask. If you pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition of Silent Hill 2, you can also break Bubble Heads while using a Mira, the dog’s head (from what Ending of Silent Hill 2). But someone is missing.

Fortunately, FrancisLouis came to the rescue with another mod, this time adding a Robbie the Rabbit hat for our anti-protagonist. Of course, Robbie is most associated with Silent Hill 3 as the Lakeside Amusement Park mascot, but he’s still a staple of the series, and you can don his pink head, complete with bloody mouth, with this simple mod.

Leon Kennedy takes over from James Sunderland in Play As RE4R Leon, one of the best Silent Hill 2 mods.

Play as RE4R Leon

Thomas the tank engine. Robbie the Rabbit. Classic Angela. There are already plenty of Silent Hill 2 mods that replace character models with new (or old) ones, but this one might be our favorite.

Silent Hill 2 may be among our favorite games, but James Sunderland isn’t one of our favorite characters, you know, from a personality perspective. Leon Kennedy, though? Now that’s a cute newbie we can get behind. SpiritHun is here doing God’s work by adding Resident Evil 4 Remake Leon to Silent Hill 2, so you can take that sexy, shaggy-haired cop to a new city now that Raccoon City is no more.

A before and after photo of James Sunderland with and without the Hair Sheen Removal Silent Hill 2 mod.

Hair shine removal

Speaking of great hair, some people apparently think James’s, well, isn’t. If you’re bothered by the unnatural shine of James Sunderland’s oily barnet, Eggo’s Hair Sheen Removal mod mattifies your hair so the shine doesn’t distract you from survival.

Silent Hill 2 is still somewhat new, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for the best Silent Hill 2 remake mods as they arrive and adding more to this list in due course. For now, we’ve got you covered, whether you simply want the horror game to feel a little less scary, or you want to play as your favorite characters from some of the other best PC games out there.
