Final moments of police officer captured on doorbell camera before he was killed, allegedly trying to break into a house

Chilling images of an off-duty Atlanta police officer’s final moments before he was fatally shot have shocked the online community.

It was just last Friday (October 4) that Aubree Horton was shot and killed while allegedly breaking into a home in Winston, about 30 miles from Atlanta, USA.

The police investigator was caught on the homeowner’s doorbell camera running through the yard shirtless, yelling and banging on the door.

He was also seen muttering strange things to himself, which included him asking to be killed and asking Jesus to save him.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Horton was killed after 5:08 a.m. after being located by the homeowner’s wife, who called 911 while she was on her way to work.

Supposedly, she received alerts from her camera showing Horton running across her property.

Unfortunately, Horton allegedly forced entry into the home and was shot to death by the homeowner before law enforcement arrived.

Horton was part of the Atlanta Police Department, where he had worked since 2015.

He was assigned to the department’s Fugitive Unit and was even named ‘Investigator of the Year’ at the 2024 Atlanta Police Foundation’s annual Crime is Toast event.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office released partial doorbell camera footage showing Horton apparently panicking.

In the video, Horton shouted ‘Jesus’ and ‘help me’ before saying ‘I’m home’ as he approached the front door. He then slammed the door twice and said, “No, kill me.”

When Horton sat down, the owner tried to communicate with him through the door.

Then, the police officer said ‘I love you’ and ‘just kill me’ before laying down, then deciding to get up and approach the door again.

The sheriff’s office said it was when the homeowner opened the door slightly that Horton forced entry into the home and knocked down the homeowner, who then shot him in self-defense.

The office said, “Fearing for his life and in defense of his home, the homeowner fired a single shot from his firearm, fatally wounding Horton inside his home.”

According to investigators, Horton lived near the house where he died.

The sheriff’s office noted in an Oct. 5 preliminary report that Horton “appeared on video to be experiencing a mental health episode or under the influence of narcotics.”

However, it can take months to complete a toxicology report and gather evidence of what happened that morning.

Although the man shot and killed the off-duty police officer, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said it is “confident that no charges will be filed against the homeowner.”

People who watched the video online were naturally shocked by what they saw, as one person wrote: “The guy was going through something for sure. Almost as if he was being chased by demons and they got exactly the result they wanted…”

Another said: “It’s a moving scene and witnessing moments like this is very difficult.”
