This initiative is part of a larger pilot project launched by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), with the aim of creating over 1.2 lakh internship opportunities during the current financial year.

A wide range of internships available at top companies

To date, 90,849 internship opportunities have been announced by 193 companies, including prominent names from the private sector. These internships span multiple sectors and industries, offering young talent the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. The MCA is actively managing the scheme, with the aim of expanding its reach following a successful pilot phase. Based on the information obtained during this period, the ministry will finalize the scheme and seek approval from the Council of Ministers to further improve its coverage.

Various sectors and fields open for internships

Internships are spread across 24 main sectors, providing a wide range of opportunities for young professionals. The largest share of internships is concentrated in the oil, gas and energy sectors. Other key sectors include travel and hospitality, automobiles, banking and financial services, telecommunications and information technology, among others. This diversity ensures that young people from diverse educational and professional backgrounds can find relevant opportunities in their areas of interest.

Internships are available in more than 20 specialized areas, including operations management, production and manufacturing, maintenance, sales and marketing, IT and software development, human resources, and research and development. These fields cover critical areas of the industry where there is high demand for qualified professionals, allowing interns to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world experience.

National coverage of internship opportunities

One of the key aspects of the PM internship program is its broad geographic reach. Internship opportunities are not limited to urban centers or big cities, but are available in 737 districts, spanning 37 states and Union Territories. This ensures that students and young professionals from every corner of the country can access these opportunities and benefit from the program.

Apprenticeships are designed to suit both urban and rural talent pools, with companies offering internships in a variety of locations, also helping to bridge the skills gap in less industrialized areas. This national coverage aligns with the government’s broader mission to promote inclusive growth and expand economic opportunities to more regions.

Part of a broader strategy for developing young people’s skills

The PM Internship Program is part of a larger initiative announced in the July Budget, with the aim of providing one crore internships to young Indians. The program was developed to fill the skills gap that many young professionals face when entering the job market, providing them with practical experience in their chosen fields. By offering internships on such a large scale, the government aims to increase employability and make Indian youth more competitive in the global workforce.

This program is particularly important in light of the rapidly evolving job market, where employers are increasingly looking for candidates with practical experience in addition to academic qualifications. The PM Internship Program is expected to play a key role in helping young people acquire the skills and competencies needed to succeed in a wide range of industries, thereby supporting the economic growth and development of the country.

Future Expansion and Long-Term Vision

As a pilot project, the current phase of the PM Internship Program is designed to test implementation of the program and collect feedback from interns and employers. Based on the learnings from this phase, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs plans to finalize the scheme and submit it for approval by the Council of Ministers. Once approved, the scheme is likely to undergo significant expansion, with a wider range of industries and businesses joining.

In the long term, the PM Internship Program aims to become a key component of the government’s efforts to combat youth unemployment and promote skills development. By providing large-scale internship opportunities, the government is not only helping young people gain valuable professional experience, but also contributing to the creation of a more skilled and competitive workforce, which will be essential for economic growth India’s continued and global competitiveness.
