Ncuti Gatwa has confirmed that she will return for a third series of Doctor Who.

Last year, the 31-year-old Sex Education star took on the role of the Time Lord in the long-running BBC series.

He made his first appearance in the final of the three specials, which saw David Tennant briefly return to the role, before his first full season in charge aired earlier this year.

While fans already knew there was another season on the way, Ncuti’s future on the show after that had yet to be revealed.

However, the actor has now shared that he will star in a third season of the series.

‘Everything is going well. We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming… at Christmas,” he said during an appearance on the latest episode of The Graham Norton Show.

While his comments didn’t make it into the final cut, he also added that they were “filming a third season next year.”

Speaking about also taking on the role of the beloved character, Ncuti said it has been “amazing” so far, calling Whovians “the best, sweetest fans.”

Before he shared the news, Doctor Who fans knew he would return for a Christmas special this year and a 15th season in 2025.

The show has not yet been officially renewed for a 16th season, with Disney Plus now also involved in producing the series with the BBC.

However, Ncuti’s comments appear to contradict recent ones made by showrunner Russell T Davies.

Writing in the most recent issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Russell explained: “The decision to order season 3 will not be made until season 2 has been broadcast. And that was always the agreement from the beginning. Hey, we can even have a day off!

‘Although maybe not, with all of TWB (The War Between Land and Sea) to be completed and the rest of Season 2 to get into shape. Thus the Great Work continues.

‘I always think: every episode of Doctor Who is someone’s first episode. Imaginations will spark across the world as these 14 episodes sizzle, bristle and burst onto the screen.”

When Ncuti was announced as the 14th Doctor, the actor said he was “deeply honored as well as excited and a little scared” to have been cast, but that he would strive to “handle the unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.” .

The Joy to the World Christmas Special has been written by former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and will star Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan as Joy, whose potentially lonely holiday in London is interrupted for a wacky adventure with The Doctor.

So in the new year, Ncuti and co-star Millie Gibson (who plays Ruby Sunday) will have company in the TARDIS when Andor’s Varada Sethu joins as a new companion.

The Graham Norton Show airs Fridays at 10:40pm on BBC One. Doctor Who returns next for the BBC Christmas special.
