This is the terrifying moment a car on a busy street exploded in a huge ball of fire.

Firefighters rushed to St Mary’s Square in Brixham, Devon, after being alerted to the fire at 9.30pm on Thursday.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was caused by accidental ignition.

“Upon arrival, the crew found the car well lit and used two hose jets, two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, a thermal imaging camera, hydraulic cutters and spreaders and other small tools to extinguish the fire,” the spokesperson said.

‘The cause of the fire was identified as accidental ignition and the car was completely destroyed in the fire.’

Brixham Fire Station shared images on their Facebook page showing the car completely destroyed.

Firefighters remained at the scene until around 11:30 pm, when the car was removed.

In a post on social media, Brixham Fire Station said: ‘Last night at approximately 9.30pm, following our weekly training session, pagers alerted us to a car fire in St Mary’s Square Brixham.

‘The crew arrived with a lot of smoke and flames, as shown in the photos below (video in comments).

“The fire spread quickly and engulfed the entire vehicle. Two hose reel jets were deployed to extinguish the fire and make the vehicle safe.

‘We then waited with the vehicle for recovery until 11:30pm.’
