Dog’s eyes ‘say it all’ after firefighter saves him from hurricane flood

As recovery efforts continue after Hurricane Milton, one especially sweet selfie stands out.

“Check out this beautiful moment of pure gratitude and love!” Florida’s Hillsborough County Fire Rescue wrote in a Facebook post Friday.

A photo included in the post shows a wet, disheveled dog staring at a firefighter, who looks into the camera.

“This dog’s eyes say it all as he looks at Cpt. Dusty Mascaro of our HCFR (search and rescue) team after being taken to safety,” the post read.

Another photo showed Mascaro carrying the puppy, which appeared to be a Bernese mountain dog, in his arms through knee-deep floodwaters.

The post did not include details about where the dog was found, and the county fire rescue team did not immediately return a request for comment from HuffPost. In the Facebook post, the agency added that it was “ensuring no one – human or animal – is left behind” and has already rescued 104 pets. Additional photos showed a group of dogs huddled inside a bus.

Other dramatic animal rescues have gone viral in the wake of Hurricane Milton, which hit Florida on Wednesday.

The Florida Highway Troopers posted a video showing the rescue of a dog left tied to a fence in floodwaters on the side of the road north of Tampa. The dog, now named Trooper in honor of his profession as a rescuer, is in the care of an animal shelter in Florida.

And in Fort Myers, as the rain fell, journalist David Barcenas managed to pull a soaked cat meowing for help from under a car while his colleague Christopher Salas filmed the rescue. Barcenas told The Washington Post that if he finds out the cat doesn’t have a “loving family that misses her,” he wants to adopt her himself.
