President Ramaphosa shocked by death of Tito Mboweni

In a statement, Mboweni’s family says he breathed his last in hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday night after a short illness.

He was 65 years old.

Mboweni served as Minister of Finance between 2018 and 2021.

He was also South Africa’s first democratic Labor Minister in Nelson Mandela’s cabinet from 1994 to 1999.

Ramaphosa described Mboweni as an economic policy innovator and defender of labor rights.

“As governor and finance minister, he focused strongly on fiscal discipline and economic transformation. Tito Mboweni distinguished himself in different strategic roles in the private sector and was a spokesperson in global forums for our economy and the developing economies of broader way.” says Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.

“He conducted himself with expert rigor while maintaining the personal touch that has made him a social media star and ambassador for Modjadjiskloof’s culinary traditions.”
