Police arrest wrong-way driver after chase in southern Maine

YORK, Maine (WMTW) – A 58-year-old man from Glastonbury, Connecticut, was arrested Saturday morning after driving the wrong way on I-95 in southern Maine, putting several drivers at risk.

The incident began around 1:15 a.m. when Maine State Police began receiving calls about a vehicle heading south in the northbound lanes near milepost 16 in Wells. Troops from G Troop, along with officers from York and Kittery, rushed to the scene.

York police soon spotted the vehicle, a white Chevy Equinox, still driving in the wrong direction near milepost 10. They, along with state police, were able to stop it near milepost 6 in York, according to authorities.

Before police caught up with the wrong-way driver, another driver crashed while trying to avoid the oncoming vehicle near milepost 11. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident.

The driver of the Equinox was identified as Timothy Willis, who now faces a charge of operating under the influence of alcohol. Police continue to investigate the incident.
