Jets offered Haason Reddick one-year contract after start of 2024 season

When the Jets attack the defender Haason Reddick was dropped by his agency earlier this week, it seemed to be just another sign that the player and team are far from a solution to Reddick’s continued resistance. However, it appears that such a resolution was within reach not so long ago.

At some point after the start of the season, the Jets presented a one-year offer sheet that would have allowed Reddick to recoup all of the fines he accrued as a result of his holdout and given him a chance to earn more than the $14.25 million who was winning. originally scheduled to play in 2024, the final season of his contract signed by the Eagles (per NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). At that time, as veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson writes, there was optimism that the Jets would bring Reddick into the fold, and Rapoport says the deal was “almost done.”

Reddick, however, refused to sign the deal and continued to push for a multi-year deal (as Rapoport details in an NFL Network appearance). As a result, this process doesn’t appear to be any closer to the finish line than it was during the offseason.

According to Rapoport, Reddick must report by Week 13 to avoid a contract charge and become a free agent in 2025. Otherwise, he will be in the same position – at least from a contractual standpoint – that he is currently in. Even a Week 13 report doesn’t appear to be a certainty, with Rapoport suggesting Reddick could take “an even more principled stance” and abandon the game entirely.

Reddick’s decision to continue his holdout was against the recommendation of CAA, his previous agency, and his refusal to sign the one-year offer that was presented after the start of the season was presumably against CAA’s advice as well. Before the start of the season, New York would have been receptive to sweetening Reddick’s existing contract with incentives, and it’s unclear how those proposals differ from the in-season offer that Rapoport reported today (although CAA probably wouldn’t have ended its relationship with Reddick if believed he was right to reject the season opener). The Jet also offered Reddick an extension before consummating the trade that apparently brought the 30-year-old defender to Florham Park, although Reddick obviously declined as well (and to be fair, that offer was considered below market). ).

Despite the offensive struggles that cost the coach Robert Saleh his work and led to a demotion to O.C. Nathaniel Hackettthe Jets are playing good defense and currently rank fourth in the league in sacks (18). Still, the club would undoubtedly love to add a player of Reddick’s caliber to their pass-rushing contingent, which would help further compensate for the attacking deficiencies. Whether this will happen, however, remains to be seen.

Owner Woody Johnsonwho previously said that Reddick would be welcomed into the team “with open arms” if he decided to report, highlighted the uncertainty of the outcome of this saga.

This is something I’ve never seen before, you know… I don’t think any of us have ever seen anything like this. I think you have to be part psychologist and part some other essence to try to figure out what’s really going on.”
