Car theft suspect arrested after series of incidents in Bergen County


BERGEN COUNTY, NJ – A suspect involved in a series of carjackings and confrontations with police was arrested Sunday morning following a series of related incidents throughout Bergen County, authorities said. The South Hackensack Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Squad are leading the investigation.

At approximately 2:34 a.m. Sunday, South Hackensack police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Route 46. The occupant of the accident vehicle abandoned the car and attempted to steal another vehicle nearby, but was unable to do so. The suspect then successfully committed an armed robbery of a different vehicle before fleeing the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that the vehicle involved in the crash had been stolen in a previous armed robbery in New York City, authorities said.

A short time later, the stolen vehicle was found disabled on the George Washington Bridge. Officers from the Port Authority Police Station responded and located the suspect, who was armed with a knife. The suspect attacked the police officers and attempted to steal a police vehicle before being arrested.

Three Port Authority police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation and were treated at a local hospital. They have since been released.

The suspect was also taken to a hospital and remains in custody pending charges. His identity is being withheld while initial charges are filed in Bergen County Superior Court and the investigation continues.

More details about the incident and the suspect’s background are expected to be released as the investigation develops.

    According to authorities, the teenager was approached from behind by a group of unknown men who punched and kicked him before forcibly taking his shoes, backpack and iPhone. The victim suffered bruises and small cuts to his face, but refused medical attention at the scene.

    The suspects fled on foot and their whereabouts remain unknown. Police continue to investigate the incident and seek information to identify those involved.

  • Early morning fire at Salisbury apartment building under investigation

    SALISBURY, Md. – A fire broke out early Sunday morning in a three-story apartment building on Adams Avenue in Salisbury, Wicomico County, causing minor damage but no injuries, authorities said. The incident occurred at approximately 5:12 a.m. in the foyer outside the doors of the second-floor apartments in the building, which is owned by Blue Hedge Rental.

    The occupants of the affected apartment, identified as Joseph Barlow and Deborah Shockley, were unharmed. The fire caused an estimated $1,000 in damage – $500 to the structure and $500 to the interior contents.

    The Salisbury Fire Department responded with six firefighters, but the fire was already out when they arrived. Smoke alarms were present in the building but did not work, and there were no fire alarms or sprinklers installed.

    The cause of the fire is still being investigated and no arrests have been made.
