How Red Bull could have put $35m-a-year deal at risk after firing Australian star Daniel Ricciardo

  • Daniel Ricciardo was fired by Red Bull mid-season
  • But the team offered him an ambassador role
  • His elimination came after his poor form this season

Liam Lawson is set to replace Daniel Ricciardo at the Visa Cash App RB team for the final six races of the Formula 1 season.

The team has chosen to part ways with the beloved Australian driver following his indifferent form on track this season.

But it looks like the Austrian Formula 1 team could lose a lot of money thanks to a deal the former McLaren driver helped them negotiate, according to reports.

Ricciardo was officially fired from Red Bull Racing after the Singapore Grand Prix. His best result this season came in Canada, where he placed eighth in the race, with Ricciardo failing to finish inside the top ten in his last seven races for the team, coming 18th in Singapore.

Off the track, Ricciardo is one of the sport’s most marketable characters thanks to his charm, intelligence and entertaining driving.

Speculation has emerged in recent weeks about what his next career move will be, with Red Bull team boss Christian Horner saying the team has offered him an ambassador role.

But it appears Ricciardo’s dismissal could have a major impact on Red Bull’s revenue sources.

That’s according to News.com.au, which claims the team’s “commercial value could significantly decline” following his departure.

A report from ESPN claims that Ricciardo helped the team close a massive $35 million per year partnership deal with Visa and Cash App.

The media outlet claims that Ricciardo’s representatives, CAA Sports, helped close the deal.

Sources close to the outlet also inferred that Ricciardo’s role in the team helped increase the value of the transaction.

Since his departure, Ricciardo has also been offered the chance of a stint in Supercars.

Supercars boss Shane Howard said last week that eight-time Formula One race winner Ricciardo had urged the Australian to consider a move to the sport.

‘If Daniel is listening, we want you to race here,’ Howard said on Thursday ahead of the Bathurst 1000.

‘Wouldn’t that be fantastic? Having someone with Daniel Ricciardo’s quality as a driver.

‘He has a huge personality. Having it in one of our cars would be very special. We have an open invitation for Daniel.

There is still, however, a chance for him to return to Formula 1, with Horner highlighting that Red Bull Racing would like him to work for the organization as an ambassador.

The Australian has also been offered a potential lifeline back into motorsport, with Supercars bosses offering the driver the chance to drive on the Australian circuit.

“Daniel is just a brilliant character, a brilliant human being,” Horner said following Ricciardo’s departure. ‘He lights up a room when he walks into it, he has that infectious smile. I hope he continues in the sport.

“We made it very clear that we want him to remain as an ambassador for the team. Of course, you never really know. If Liam doesn’t do the job, if Checo (Perez) doesn’t do the job… We know what Daniel’s capabilities are.’
