Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman discusses Kirby Smart’s push on opposing QB

Saturday’s game between Georgia and Mississippi State was perhaps closer than anticipated, but it won’t soon be remembered for what happened on the field. The top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs beat Mississippi State 41-31, but a shove by coach Kirby Smart on a Mississippi State player drew the most postgame interest.

If you haven’t seen the incident yet, check it out below.

Marcus Freeman assesses how to push an opponent

Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman was asked about the Smart incident on Saturday, although the reporter who asked did not use Smart’s name. Freeman admitted that he didn’t know what the incident in question was, but that everyone on the Notre Dame sideline should only be doing things for one reason.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but the general rule is to use common sense,” Freeman said, “if you’re not helping Notre Dame – if you’re not helping us win or doing something to help us succeed, then you I probably shouldn’t be doing this.”

“Putting your hands on another opponent’s player is not helping us win, so at the end of the day everyone has a role on our team on that sideline and that role has to be to help us win, no matter what the case may be. . to be.”

Quick view from Nick Shepkowski:

I know Freeman is being a little cautious and I understand why, especially since he says he wasn’t sure about the incident or the coach in question. However, this is quite common sense.

If you’re not on the field of play, or you’re not doing something as a player or coach on the sideline trying to encourage a player – THEN DON’T PUSH PEOPLE.

I’m not calling for Kirby Smart to get the Woody Hayes treatment, because it wasn’t a punch, but I’m pretty shocked that he was able to make a fool of himself after the game and pretend he didn’t remember and get away with virtually no criticism.

There is a prime example of their ESPN/SEC sweetheart deal in action.
