Woman arrested after ‘violent assault’ on French tourists in Hobart park

A woman has been taken into custody after allegedly assaulting several people in Hobart’s St David’s Park this afternoon.

Police were called to the scene at around 3.50pm on Tuesday after receiving reports of an assault.

An eyewitness told Pulse that the woman, believed to be living in a tent in the park, came out “in a rage” and “ran into a group of French tourists” who were lying on the ground.

“She grabbed one by the hair and tried to kick him in the head,” the witness alleged.

“Then another person from the tent came over and took her to the Supreme Court, she punched a woman and went to Salamanca.”

The witness said they called the police and helped the woman who had been knocked to the ground.

“The lady from the tent then started coming back through the park threatening people, so I got her attention… as I approached the police.”

The witness said the woman followed him, unaware that the police had been called, before being arrested “after a struggle”.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson told Pulse no serious injuries were reported in the incident.

“(The woman) is currently in custody assisting police with their investigation into the matter,” they said.
