Woman finds dead cockroach in Shein delivery days after student finds live scorpion in retailer’s package

A woman was shocked to discover a dead cockroach in her Shein delivery just days after a student found a live scorpion in her package from the fast fashion brand.

Amy Jowett ordered a pair of joggers online, but when she opened the package the dead bug fell out.

She first thought it was a ‘large moth’ before quickly realizing it was a cockroach.

Mrs Jowett, from Langport, Somerset, said it was “disgusting” and horrible.”

When opening her other Shein packages, she said she used “pincer fingers” and gave it a “good shake” as she was “paranoid” that there would be more bugs inside.

She told the BBC she thought: ‘What’s going on here, I didn’t order any bugs.’

The Langport resident added: ‘It’s ridiculous that there was only one scorpion found and now this.’

Shein said he contacted Jowett to resolve the issue. MailOnline has reached out for more information.

Four days ago, Sofia Alonso-Mossinger, 18, was opening a package containing a pair of boots from the fast fashion brand when she spotted the scorpion.

The University of Bristol student saw this under her clothes and quickly called on her housemates for help.

Flatmate and zoology student Oliver James quickly picked up the insect with kitchen tongs before placing it in a plastic box.

Unfortunately, when he called the teacher for advice, even she didn’t have a solution, so the group resorted to cutting holes in the container so he could breathe.

Shocking footage shows the venomous creature running around the container with its claws and tail in an attempt to escape.

Reliving the moment, Alonso-Mossinger told the BBC: “I thought I was dreaming.

“I feel like I’m okay with spiders and stuff like that, but it was scary being in my room with a random scorpion.”

Oliver, who made the brave attempt to transfer the scorpion, spoke about how “destructive” it was to deal with the pest without having any idea of its venom.

Phoebe Hunt – also 18 – rushed to her flatmates’ side after hearing screams and finding the live scorpion rattling around the package.

Mrs. Hunt confessed that she suggested they kill the scorpion first.

“Then everyone pointed out that it wasn’t the most humane thing, so we took it and put it in Tupperware,” she added.

While planning what to do with the animal, the university students fed the insect water and kitchen paper towels.

The group initially called the RSPCA before realizing it was a matter better suited to the National Center for Reptile Welfare (NCRW).

NCRW’s Chris Newman told the publication: “The scorpion is Olivierus martensii, it doesn’t actually have a common name other than the Chinese scorpion.”

He later explained that while an insect bite could be “potentially fatal,” most adults would simply have a really bad day.

“It’s quite worrying because this is the second one we’ve had in less than a month that’s happened like this,” he added.

It is understood that Shein is currently investigating the matter across multiple departments.

A spokesperson said: ‘SHEIN is committed to providing our customers with quality products and services.

‘We have a set of strict product quality inspection standards and procedures. Our suppliers are required to comply with these standards and SHEIN aims to ensure that our products and packaging meet high standards of cleaning and hygiene.

‘We work closely with reputable last-mile delivery partners so that our customers can receive their purchases in good condition.

“After receiving feedback, we immediately conducted an internal investigation.

“Our teams on the ground checked the shipment packaging process and carried out an inspection of the goods in our warehouse and confirmed that all standard operational processes were respected.

“We are currently in contact with the affected customer to resolve this issue.”
