‘Yashasvi Jaiswal is not happy with what he has achieved…’: Rohit Sharma fascinated by young opener’s hunger to learn

Indian team captain Rohit Sharma has heaped huge praise on rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal after his recent appearance in international cricket. Jaiswal has been India’s best batsman in the ongoing World Test Championship. He made his India debut after last edition’s WTC final and announced his arrival with a century against West Indies. The left-handed batsman hit 1,217 runs in 11 Tests with three hundreds at an impressive average of 64.05.

He broke the record books earlier this year in the Test series against England when he smashed over 700 runs in five Tests.

Rohit is very impressed with the young left-hander’s insatiable hunger to learn and succeed at the highest level.

“I’m not surprised at all because the guy has real talent. He has the game to play in all kinds of conditions,” Rohit said at the pre-match press meet here on Tuesday.

“Obviously it’s very new to international cricket at the moment so it’s very difficult to judge. But he has all the ingredients for success at this level,” he added.

The Indian captain spoke about Jaiswal’s positive attitude towards the game. He said he is not happy with what he has achieved and is eager to learn more about the game.

“He’s someone who wants to learn the game, learn about the skill of the batsman. When a young player joins the team, his mentality is quite critical.

“He always wants to improve and is not happy with what he has achieved and what is obviously a great start to a young career. We have found a great player. Hopefully he can continue to do what he has done over the last year or so.”

‘You can bank on Yashasvi Jaiswal to do wonders for the team’

Over the years, Indian cricket has seen many wonderful talents stray and fail to reach the heights they deserved, and Rohit offered a word of caution to Jaiswal.

“It’s just a question of how he performs over the next few years. But what he has shown us in this brief period of time, you can bet he will do wonders for the team.

“He rose through the ranks. I hope what he has done, I hope he continues to do that,” he said.

Rohit said Jaiswal also gave India a different option by being left-handed.

“He’s played a lot of domestic cricket, under-19 cricket. He’s also had success, and that’s why he’s playing for India. Obviously, it’s good for our team too, that he’s left-footed, he’s massively aggressive,” he added.
