A downed tree caused a train crash in South Jersey on Monday, killing one person and injuring nearly two dozen passengers.

The incident on the NJ Transit River LINE near Roebling Station in Burlington County on Monday morning killed the train operators and injured more than half of the approximately 40 passengers on board.

Rail service remained out of service on Tuesday.

What is the Rio LINE?

The River LINE is a light rail transit system in South Jersey, transporting passengers to 21 stops along the Delaware River. It spans 34 miles between Camden and Trenton, connecting commuters, students and travelers to transportation hubs like NJ Transit, PATCO and Amtrak.

The River LINE opened in early 2004 and shares a single-track route with off-peak freight trains.

The service is owned by NJ Transit and operated by Southern New Jersey Rail Group.

The service carries several thousand passengers per day in light rail vehicles designed to be quieter and more efficient than conventional trains.

Where is Roebling station?

The deadly incident on the NJ Transit River LINE on Monday killed the train operator and injured nearly two dozen passengers when the light rail service struck a tree on the tracks near one of the stations.

The accident occurred near the River LINE’s Roebling station near Medford in Burlington County.

Roebling Station is the eighth stop on the River Line traveling from Trenton toward Camden. It primarily connects departing passengers with NJ Transit bus service to other parts of South Jersey.
