Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes England have gained a “brilliant manager” in Thomas Tuchel – but admits the German ideally would not be in charge of the Three Lions. Tuchel was presented on Wednesday as the new coach of the national team, succeeding Gareth Southgate.

The former Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain manager will take up the role early next year, with interim England manager Lee Carsley remaining in charge of the final two UEFA Nations League games against Greece and the Republic. of Ireland next month.

And while he praises the Football Association for employing a first-class coach, former Liverpool defender Carragher – who won 38 England caps – has reservations about the appointment.

“When I think about England, we are so close to winning a major tournament with so much good work that has gone into developing these players at St George’s Park, it just doesn’t feel right to have a foreign manager.” he said.

“It’s not just about England – I don’t think Italy should, I don’t think Germany should, I don’t think France should. Portugal has that at the moment with Roberto Martinez, which I find strange. .

“Anyway, I’m not bothered. I have to be completely honest, I’m not the most patriotic person. It’s not just ‘the England manager has to be like this’.”

“I’m not going to lose any sleep over this. England have a brilliant manager, but I think England should have an English manager.”

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher added: “My feeling is that the aim of international football, certainly with the major nations competing in tournaments, is for it to be your best against your best.

“Club football is different and we love it, different nationalities and different coaches in the Premier League or the Champions League.

“What makes international football different from the club game is that it’s the people from your country. I know this is a little skewed with players who maybe weren’t born in the country or trace it back to their grandparents.

“And I also understand certain countries that have a foreign coach who will have an influence on them, who will bring with him the entire structure of football and pass on his experience and knowledge to all the coaches in the system and the country.”
