Woman loses leg after being hit by train in San Diego

A woman had her leg amputated after being struck by a freight train in downtown San Diego on Monday night.

San Diego Police Department officers at the scene told Scripps News San Diego that the incident occurred around 10 p.m. at the tracks at East Harbor Drive and Fifth Avenue.

According to police, the woman and several other people were trying to crawl between the train’s cars while it was moving slowly or stopped.

Witness video sent to Scripps News San Diego showed the moment a crowd — who had just left a concert at The Rady Shell in Jacobs Park — tried to maneuver through the train. However, when the train started moving, several people fell.

A woman who fell was run over and suffered serious injuries, and police said she lost one of her legs in the incident.

Paramedics took the unidentified woman to UC San Diego Medical Center for further treatment.

No other injuries were reported.

The incident is under investigation.
