Malkit Singh of New Jersey accused of scamming LI woman out of $32,000

A New Jersey man has been accused of scamming a 65-year-old Long Island woman out of $32,000 after calling her for more money while she was at a police station reporting the initial incident, Nassau police said.

Just before 5pm on Wednesday, the Roslyn Heights woman told police she received a call claiming to be from Amazon about her iPad. She was told to speak to a Federal Trade Commission agent to report fraud and was told she had outstanding warrants.

Malkit Singh, 35, posing as an agent, directed the woman to put $32,000 in cash in a box and meet him at Power House Road and Roslyn Road, police said. She placed the box inside Singh’s car when he arrived.

The next morning, the woman realized she may have been the victim of a scam and went to the Manhasset Sixth Precinct to report the incident.

While at the police station, Singh called her again and directed her to meet at the same location and bring $40,000 in cash.

Before the next exchange, detectives arrested Singh, of Carteret, New Jersey. The woman recognized that Singh was the same man who had met her the day before.

Singh was charged with third-degree robbery and attempted third-degree robbery, police said. He will be arraigned Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Anyone who believes they have been the victim of a similar incident is encouraged to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911.
