Community shocked after abandoned baby found in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Nearly 48 hours after the discovery of a child who was left on the back porch of a Springfield apartment, neighbors were still grappling with the news Thursday as police continued to look for clues to help find the baby’s parents.

The boy is in stable condition at Baystate Medical Center, but Springfield Police are now focused on finding the child’s parents to ensure they get the resources they need at this time. Meanwhile, shock continues to be felt in the city after a weeks-old boy, dressed and wrapped in a blanket, was found abandoned in his Worthington Street apartment on Tuesday night.

“Tuesday night was very cold,” said one Springfield resident. “I was upset, I was angry.”

Western Mass News spoke to someone who told us they live near the apartment where the child was found.

“I have a lot of brothers and sisters and they are little, so this is unthinkable,” said one Springfield resident.

Springfield Police Spokesperson Ryan Walsh tells us the baby is safe and detectives are hopeful a parent or relative will come forward.

“No one is wanting to press charges against you. We just want to make sure the baby is safe and finds a good home,” Walsh explained.

While police are still investigating what led to the baby’s abandonment, Walsh reiterated a message for anyone who feels overwhelmed by the responsibility of a child.

“Talk to someone you trust first, but if you need to surrender your child for any reason, do so at one of the appropriate locations: hospital, police department, fire department,” Walsh added.
