SASOD announces awareness series for educators

– ‘Common Landscape of Violence’ launched

The Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) will conduct a training and sensitization series with speakers and professors from the University of Guyana and the Cyril Potter College of Education. This is expected to begin before the end of this year, according to SASOD Director General Joel Simpson.

“We are starting with a research project first, but one of the activities we want to carry out within the research project is to sensitize teachers and educators, especially those from the UG faculty of education and CPCE,” Simpson said. “We plan to launch a series of trainings on anti-gender violence (and) restorative justice. Education stakeholders have the capacity to address these issues. The Minister of Education contacted us some time ago and spoke about raising awareness among school counselors. We haven’t been able to achieve this yet, but it is a sign that there is a will or at least an awareness that there is a problem. We recognize this is a multi-stakeholder effort. Although we project that there is something to start at the systemic level, we don’t have that access and we don’t have that control. A research proposal will be presented to the ministry to see if it will be accepted.”
