NKY Woman Sentenced in Dorm Assault Caught on Video at University of Kentucky

A Northern Kentucky woman who admitted in court to using racial slurs and assaulting another student in a University of Kentucky dorm room was sentenced Thursday, according to WKYT.

Sophia Rosing, 23, of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, pleaded guilty Aug. 12 to four counts of misdemeanor assault, as well as disorderly conduct and public intoxication, Fayette County Commonwealth’s Attorney Kimberly Baird said. She was banned from the University of Kentucky campus.

In exchange for Rosing’s plea, prosecutors agreed to reduce a felonious assault on a police officer charge to a misdemeanor.

Rosing was sentenced to 12 months in prison, 100 hours of community service and a $25 fine, WYKY said.

Rosing’s charges stem from a racist speech and assault on a black student on November 6, 2022. It all started when Rosing was arrested after a confrontation in Boyd Hall.

According to a citation from the University of Kentucky Police Department, an officer responded to the residence hall for a report of a woman assaulting staff.

The case came into the public eye after videos were posted online. In them, a woman identified by authorities as Rosing can be seen fighting with the receptionist and later with police. The video also captures her repeatedly using racial slurs.

Rosing was arrested that night and later banned permanently from campus. UK President Eli Capilouoto announced on social media that she would not be allowed to re-enroll at university.

Fred Peters, Rosing’s attorney, said the plea came after mediation between Rosing and the victims. As part of the mediation, the victims also had the opportunity to confront Rosing about what happened, Baird said, adding that the victims ultimately supported accepting Rosing’s plea.
