Indian captain Rohit Sharma suffered an unusual dismissal during Day 3 of the opening Test against New Zealand on Friday. Rohit, who reached a solid half-century in the second innings of the Test, was left in disbelief after a defensive shot off the front foot saw the ball bounce back onto the stumps.

In what appeared to be a routine forward save, the ball slipped off the inner half of Rohit’s bat and rolled smoothly onto the stumps before he could react. The crowd, like Rohit, was stunned, frozen in silence at the unexpected dismissal. The Indian captain looked settled, just as India appeared to be gaining momentum, but this awkward dismissal gave New Zealand a crucial breakthrough.

Rohit stayed on the field and let out a loud scream after the dismissal.

To attend:

It was a huge bonus for the Kiwis, who were on the backfoot before Rohit’s premature wicket changed the momentum. With India’s captain walking off the field with his head down, the visitors grabbed a much-needed opportunity as Rohit looked threatening, especially after tea.

Before his dismissal, Rohit smashed three consecutive boundaries to complete a half-century. For India, Rohit’s dismissal could not have come at a worse time, just as they began to recover and build a potentially commanding position.

“I think there is no time to react because the ball reacted very quickly. One bounce and straight into the stumps,” Gavaskar said about the Indian captain’s dismissal when asked if Rohit could have prevented the ball from hitting the stumps.

Earlier, India made a solid start to their second innings after New Zealand took a mammoth 356-run lead in the first innings. After bundling the team out for just 46, the visitors produced a brilliant batting effort, accompanied by a century from Rachin Ravindra (134) and a brilliant 64 from Tim Southee on Day 3, scoring 402.
