‘I’ll consider it a little better’

Daniil Medvedev lost to Jannik Sinner in the 70th minute at the Six Kings Slam.

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev praised Jannik Sinner after his defeat to the world number 1. #1 at Six Kings Slam 2024 on Wednesday, October 16th. Medvedev was defeated by the Italian 0-6, 3-6.

Medvedev scored six aces against Jannik Sinner, but also committed three double faults. In the first set, the Russian tennis player lost his serve three times, failing to win a single game. The former US Open champion tried to reinforce his strength in the second set, but ended up losing the match because he couldn’t keep up with Sinner’s pace.

After the match, Medvedev praised Sinner for his brilliant performance. The Russian, who has also faced the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, said he had never faced someone at the level the ATP world number 1 was at during their clash at the Six Kings Slam on Wednesday.

He said (via Six Kings Slam press): “If Carlos is at the top of his game, I would consider him a little better. Today I changed my opinion. I’ve never played with someone who played like Jannik today.”

The 28-year-old also spoke about the comparison between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. He stated that the ATP world number 1 is slightly better than the four-time Grand Slam champion. Medvedev and Sinner are currently tied at 7-7 in their overall head-to-head record on tour.

The Russian tennis star added: “When we compare Carlos to Jannik, I usually think of Jannik as a little more consistent, more like a machine, whereas Carlos is a little more, you know, up and down with some sparkle. But when Carlos is at his peak, I would consider him a little better.”

Playing at the 2024 Shanghai Masters, Medvedev’s campaign came to an end against eventual champion Sinner 1-6 4-6 in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, the Russian tennis star withdrew from the ATP 500 Vienna Open due to shoulder problems.

He said (via IG erstebankopen): “I have a lot of positive memories of the tournament. So it’s a shame I can’t compete, but I will definitely play in Vienna next year.”
