Adkins, who also runs his own electrical contracting business, paid £29,000 for the 2021-registered Ford on September 10, which leaves it still under warranty.

“He quickly went up and started hitting,” he added.

“You never think this would happen to you – it was really surreal.

“After the shock, it’s hard to accept.”

Two lanes at Junction Six, near Worcester, were closed for hours as firefighters battled the blaze.

Adkins said Spa Motors Hereford, which sold him the car, told him to check his insurance in relation to the incident.

“It wasn’t my doing and cars don’t just catch fire, so it must have been a mechanical problem,” Adkins said.

“The insurance company is sending an investigator to evaluate the car and find out what caused the fire.”

A spokesperson for Spa Motors Hereford said: “We are currently corresponding with the customer on the matter.

“We have no further comment to make.”

A Ford spokesperson said: “The reasons for this incident would need to be investigated by the insurer in the first instance.

“Ford is willing to support third-party investigations.”
