Bluesky App Trends After Elon Musk’s X (Twitter) Adjusts Its Lock Settings

After the controversial rebrand X (formerly Twitter), Elon Musk has once again been attacked and this time, it’s for the new block settings. While the social media platform’s new feature aims for “greater transparency,” the move has raised concerns about online stalking and harassment. Amid X’s questionable change, some users have already started migrating to another app, Blue Sky.

Earlier this week, X announced that it will soon launch a new feature allowing blocked accounts to still view public posts from users who have blocked them. However, this will restrict engagement with the post such as liking, replying, reposting, etc. X’s announcement was met with criticism as several users commented on his ideas. One commenter wrote: “Big day for stalkers and harassers,” while another said: “This isn’t blocking. It’s supporting persecution.”

Bluesky sees a spike in app downloads after X changes its blocking settings

While X (formerly Twitter) continues to face backlash over its new blocking setting, another social media platform – the Bluesky app – has shared that its signups are increasing massively. After X announced the news, Bluesky’s official account welcomed users to its platform. They wrote in the X: “At Bluesky, we take online security seriously.”

Bluesky further added, “If you want to block someone, you can! It’s your experience to personalize.” The platform noted that more than 100,000 new users joined the app in just 12 hours. After that, the count rose to over half a million new people in one day as they celebrated their rise in popularity. Meanwhile, Bluesky started trending on Platform X as users encouraged others to join the app.

Last year, Musk declared that the change in the blocking function was coming to the platform. Replying to a post, he shared: “The block will be deleted as a ‘resource’ except for DMs.” However, it is currently unclear when the new blocking function will take effect. Meanwhile, X is yet to address users’ concerns regarding online security on the platform.
