Ritter Public Library to Host Haunted Candyland on October 28

The Ritter Public Library, 5680 Liberty Ave. in Vermilion, will host Haunted Candyland from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 28 in the library’s teen department.

The event, like other Candyland-inspired events at the library, takes youngsters into a scarier version of the board game as they become game pieces.

Aimee Adams, youth services manager at the Ritter Public Library, said the game will include different scenes throughout the teen department, each with a spooky theme.

“They all have a spooky feel,” Adams said. “This is the first time we’ve done a haunted version of the game for our older kids.”

Just like in the original game, Adams said there are different scenes centered around a festive or spooky theme.

The game includes a scary circus, a licorice forest and a sweet corn field.

Players will roll dice and move on colored markers placed on the floor to mimic a real-life board game.

Adams said the game will provide a fun and festive experience for the community and will help expose guests to the renovations and new additions to the space.

“We have been looking for different programming, specifically for our teens, since we renovated the teen space and we want to draw attention to that,” she said. “I want to draw attention to this area because it is wonderful; It’s beautiful.”

The teen department features unique electronics, such as a Nintendo Switch, as well as a sensory corner that includes light features, according to Adams.

The section is also filled with a variety of books, including a large selection of graphic novels, and is located in a location with light traffic compared to the rest of the library.

“They will be able to see the different features of that room,” Adams said.

This year’s approach to the Candyland theme was inspired by the ongoing work library staff are doing to create events and programs that school-aged children will enjoy, she said.

The relationship between the library and students is growing positively and their interests are taken into account, Adams said.

“We have been actively working on developing deeper relationships with all of our friends at elementary school and Sailorway Middle School,” she said. “We hear you; we’re paying attention to what you’re interested in.”

The event is best suited for children in grades 4-12.

Registration is mandatory.
