Dear Governor Mike DeWine,

In the weeks since Donald Trump told the lies about Haitians eating pets in Springfield, you have come to the defense of those Haitians.

You highlighted that they are legal immigrants who have helped boost Springfield’s weakened economy.

I suspect you did this because you felt sympathy and loyalty for the Haitians. I know you strongly support a school in Haiti. It is commendable that you joined the mayor and the Springfield Police Department in debunking the pet-eating lies that Trump and his running mate persisted in telling. It took courage to challenge Trump.

Letter: DeWine’s hometown was dragged through the mud by liars. He still puts the party first.

So why have you remained silent about an even bigger lie that Trump continues to tell?

There are other big lies

I’m referring to his lie that he won the 2020 presidential election.

This lie was not just a political stunt like the Haitian lie.

The 2020 lie was an attack on election boards across the country. It was an attack on all states that verified election results, sometimes with numerous recounts. And it was an attack on every court, including the Supreme Court, which found no evidence of the widespread fraud he falsely claimed had occurred. In short, it was an attack on our democratic institutions.

Letter: Mike DeWine betrayed Ohioans with an endless devotion to liars. What a shame for him.

Trump’s persistence in this lie fueled distrust in an electoral system in which fraud was almost non-existent.

Trump’s lies have consequences

Have you forgotten that his 2020 lie triggered the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol?

Whether Trump himself led the attack or not, this attack would not have happened if he hadn’t lied about the election.

In January 2020, you condemned the attack. You said: “It was a direct attack on our Constitution and everything we hold dear.” At the time, you also said: “Joe Biden has been elected president of the United States and will be inaugurated in two weeks.”

So, you didn’t believe Trump’s lie.

Yet now you support the man whose lie resulted in that “direct attack on the Constitution.”

And if you support the man, then you support his lie. In doing so, you have cast your lot with the only president in the history of the United States who refused to accept the will of the people and follow the Constitution’s guidelines for the peaceful transfer of power.

Democrats lied. I’d rather dance with the devil than vote for Biden.

You recently told an interviewer that you are a Republican and that you will vote for the Republican candidate for president. As a longtime Republican, you are obviously loyal to your party. But he also demonstrated loyalty to the Springfield Haitians falsely slandered by Trump. You had the courage to break with your party’s candidate to defend Haitians.

Do you have the courage to break with your party’s candidate to defend and preserve the Constitution?
