In shock! Pee-wee turtle rescued after accidentally falling into glass crusher at recycling site

Not even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could handle a death-defying adventure like this…

A turtle named Pee-wee miraculously escaped when he was caught in the trash at a recycling center, where he was picked up by an excavator, thrown into a hopper and put through a glass crusher.

Even so, he emerged from the machinery bloodied but alive, and was later removed from a conveyor belt where trash is manually sorted.

Forklift driver Paul Frost, 41, whose colleague found the turtle, said: “I didn’t think he would survive as he was bleeding from cuts and scratches and was missing a piece of his shell.

“I took him home and my wife bathed him with warm water.

‘It looked like he was smiling when she rubbed his shell with a toothbrush, it was really cute.

‘We gave him some cucumber and he seemed to perk up, and we knew he would be fine.’

Paul’s wife Louise, 38, said: “He’s surprisingly fast for a turtle, but I have no idea how he managed to avoid all these dangers.

“It is remarkable that he has not suffered further injuries. We think someone may have accidentally thrown it away when it was hibernating, or maybe they decided they couldn’t care for it anymore and just discarded it, which is really sad.

Paul – who was nicknamed Dr Dolittle by colleagues after rescuing three kittens from the recycling plant last year – said Pee-wee could have been sitting in a pile of rubbish for up to two months before arriving at Midtown Recycling Centre. -UK at Grantham, Lincolnshire, in a 22 tonne waste consignment.

How he managed to survive remains a mystery and had he not been located, Pee-wee, Hermann’s tortoise, would have ended up in an incinerator.

Pee-wee was taken home by Paul Frost, who works at the factory, and cared for by him and his wife Louise.

Veterinarian Sara Marchant, 55, manager of Kirks Vets in nearby Sleaford, is currently looking after Pee-wee.

She said: ‘He appears to be in good health. He is microchipped, but the chip is not registered, so we are unable to trace the owner.

“The recycling center collects rubbish from all over the country, so we don’t know where it came from. He is a very, very lucky turtle and a sweetheart.

Pee-wee will be under vet care for a while if his owner comes forward, otherwise Paul and Louise will take him in.
