F1 CEO suggests return of iconic Grand Prix to calendar

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has hinted at the possible return of a Grand Prix to Argentina following the success of new Williams driver Franco Colapinto.

Colapinto recently rose to prominence in Formula 1 when he replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams at the Italian Grand Prix. Colapinto quickly impressed on the track, achieving promising results, including 12th place at Monza after a difficult qualifying round, and 8th at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he scored his first F1 points. Colapinto’s success is supported by digital services company Globant, which supports both him and the Williams F1 team.

The current difficulty for Colapinto is the lack of F1 seats available in 2025. While he has proven himself worthy of a full-time role in Formula 1, only the remaining Sauber seat remains as a viable option for him.

Stefano Domenicali’s comments were made during an event celebrating Globant’s partnership with Formula 1. Reflecting on his connection with Argentina, Domenicali shared, as quoted by Autosport:

“I was there the last time everyone was in Buenos Aires to race in 1997 (sic), it’s a sign that we’re not very old, but that’s life.

“I really hope that all of this, everything that you are doing for your country and also what Franco is doing, is great for your country and I hope that it gives your country, once again, hopefully sooner or later, the possibility of South America welcoming not only Mexico – in Central America – São Paulo in Brazil… why not?

“We are a world championship, but as always in life, in any marriage, you have to have two – so we are ready to see if anyone is ready, but we will wait and look ahead if it happens.”

The last Formula 1 race held in Argentina took place in 1998, with Michael Schumacher taking victory. Historically, the fame of Argentine motorsport is strongly linked to the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio, who won four times at home.

Martin Migoya, CEO of Globant, also commented on the hopes of an F1 return to Argentina:

“All the stars are aligning, right? Because we signed a partnership with Formula 1 and then Franco was promoted to Formula 1 and for us this is extremely important.

“Not only because we are an Argentine company, born in Argentina, that we have become global and can be here for the first time, but because this represents exactly the same thing that is happening with Franco.

“Those things happen with a lot of effort, with a lot of humility, with a lot of work and at some point they give beautiful results.

“I think our partnership here, along with our support for Williams and Franco, is extremely important for our country, for our region and I think it will be beautiful to see how things move forward.”

While excitement surrounding Argentina’s potential re-entry into the F1 calendar continues to grow, it is important to consider the already extensive calendar of 24 races per season.
