According to a Dayton police spokesperson, the caller told dispatchers that a man threatened to kill her.

When police arrived at the scene, the man returned to the scene armed and got into a car. Officers then issued a countywide call for assistance, or a Signal 99.

Police spent at least 25 minutes trying to calm the situation until the man allegedly “brandished his weapon” at officers, according to Dayton police Maj. Paul Saunders.

“The guy ended up reinvesting a firearm in the police officers. Officers were forced to discharge their firearms and the subject was later pronounced dead at the hospital,” Saunders said.

Saunders confirmed that Dayton officers and a Moraine officer were involved in the shooting.

Margret Booze, who lives a block away on Rosedale Drive, said she was scared.

“The gunshots were, oh my God, I’m not sure I thought it was a war zone,” Booze said.

She heard so many gunshots that she lost count.

“I was going to say two dozen, at least 20, shots. But they were very loud, not like a normal gun, but like something that was a big gun,” Booze said.

Booze said he has lived here for decades and has never seen so many police near his home.

“The street was flooded with police. No one could give us an explanation as to what was happening or whether we were safe,” Booze said.

Other members of the community feel more should be done for those suffering from mental health.

Mia Colon said she studied with the man and doesn’t know what to think of this situation.

“I feel bad that this happened. He was a nice guy. I don’t think he deserved this, just like I don’t think he deserved to die,” Colon said.

Colon said the person she knew had a reserved personality.

“They were really nice, kind, like, he never got in any trouble that I knew of,” she said.

No officers were injured in this shooting.

Investigators told News Center 7 additional details will be revealed next week.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was asked to handle the criminal investigation related to the shooting.

An independent administrative investigation will be conducted by the Professional Standard Bureau.

News Center 7 is working to discover the man’s identity and will continue to follow this story.
